How to use Harmonic Minor Chord in Guitar

Updated: Jul 23, 2021

A song of C Key will usually have chords of:

C Dm Em F G Am B

However, if you find such song which comes with E chord as well, it doesn't mean that is wrong.

It is because of using Harmonic Minor...

Here is why:

First of all, a song of C Key is having Am as its relative natural minor key.

List the scale of Am key:

A B C D E F G A <------ This is Natural Minor

*** Watch out *** Sharp the seventh note:

A B C D E F G# A <------ This is Harmonic Minor

Okay now, find out all the chords having G#

1. C + E + G# -----> Caug

2. E + G# + B -----> E

3. G# + B + D -----> G#dim

4. no more...

According to above available chords, E is oftenly applied in composing because among the three chords, it is the most popular chords, most general chords, the easiest to use and to get a result of comfortable melody for human ears.

For eg. 你的名字我的姓氏, a song in C Key will have E chord.
